The very word « calligraphy » indicates only a portion of a much larger phenomenon.
Gysin studied Japanese calligraphy while he was serving in the Canadian army and working as a translator of Japanese during the Second World War.
Later, in 1950, Gysin studied Arabic calligraphy and script in Morocco. He also absorbed and practised gestural abstraction, having shared a studio with Matta, and he spent time with Max Ernst, Arshile Gorky and Jackson Pollock in New York in the late 1940s.
Therefore the tendency towards sense and structure in Gysin’s painting, associated with the linguistic signs of Japanese or Arabic, was combined early on with interest in pure fluctuations of density and energy in the visual field.(Guy Brett, p 53, in Brion Gysin, Edited by José Férez Kuri, Thames and Hudson, 2003)
