Hi all,

Spring is coming ! Not too soon ! This winter has been long, cold and damp and seemed endless.
Recently, I went to Paris and met Ramuntcho for an interview on a video, which I am going to transcript to add in the book "Le Temps des Naguals : autour de Burroughs et Gysin". I am going to work at the video before putting it on line : to view next month.

"Voilà un titre fort dalinien dont on ne pourra tirer aucune explication auprès de l’auteur puisque celui-ci ne se dévoile que sous le pseudonyme d’Electrophone.Nous n’avons, que quelques indices: il est originaire de Salses et connaît l’artiste peintre Michel Pagnoux qui est l’auteur de la couverture. Quant à la maison d’édition “La Buanderie électrique” elle ne figurait point sur Ia liste des stands de la San Jordi. Mystère, mystère... Ce n’est pas un livre, c’est un joyeux et impertinent bordel où le rock’n’roll vrombit à fond les potentiomètres. On nous annonce des contes pour grands enfants et c’est un peu ça en beaucoup moins formel. En tout cas ça déchire grave, ce n’est pas du tout politiquement correct et ledélire n’est pas mince.Etrange et décapant...."

Master Musicians of Joujouka Festival 5-7 June 2009 Joujouka.

The Master Musicians announce their summer festival will be held 5-7 June 2009 in their village in Morocco. Guests will stay with the musicians and their families and experience three days and nights of ritual Sufi music in its natural setting. On Saturday 6 June the musicians will perform the Boujeloud ritual in the village square through the night. In July 2008 the Master Musicians of Joujouka hosted the Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival in their village in the southern Rif Mountains of Northern Morocco. The festival was a celebration of fortieth anniversary of Brian Jones’ recording the iconic LP Brian Jones presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka (Rolling Stones Records 1971). The festival broughtthe families of old Masters now passed on and a group of visitors from abroadincluding old friends of the errant Rolling Stone.Guest willexperience life in Joujouka staying with the musicians and their families in their isolated village. The Master Musicians of Joujouka willplay in intimate sessions around their madrassa/school. The highlight of the festival will be the village’s celebration of the Boujeloud ritual in the village square.Places at the festival are strictly limited as due to accommodation limitations with the families in Joujouka/Jajouka. Guests will be collected from Ksar El Kebir the nearest town to Joujouka on Friday 5th June and will be brought to the village. Full board will be provided. Food will be prepared in traditional Joujouka fashion from locally sourced produced. Joujouka is a framing community well as Sufi trance music the village is famous for its beautiful olives and olive oil. The festival is booking now. The earlybird price is €250 euro. Voici la première lettre de mise à jour pour cette nouvelle année 2009, mais déjà la quarante-cinquième depuis le retour du site www.templiers.org sur la toile.
Pour ce numéro, je vous propose de découvrir deux nouvelles commanderies en France : La Cavalerie et Sainte-Eulalie-de-cernon.
Les premières mentions de l’installation des Templiers à La Cavalerie datent de 1180, lorsqu’il est mentionné l’existence de l’église dans le village fondé par l’Ordre...(pour lire la suite)

En discutant avec quelques internautes au sujet de l'Ordre Teutonique et de ses implantations en Pologne, je me suis aperçu de l'existence d'un lien mort vers le château de Kwidzyn. Au VIème siècle, les environs du village actuel de Kwidzyn étaient habités par les Pomézaniens, une des nombreuses tribus Prusse occupant le territoire de la Pologne actuelle. "Div Joyvision" by Datawhore and michael dent now on iTunes

Datawhore is a sound poet based in the UK and creating solo or collaborating with a number of other artists. Datawhore's sounds cover a wide spectrum, from the outrightly ironic and satirical to the very serious and intense. Recently Datawhore released five albums on iTunes, the most recent being "Div Joyvision" comprising a collaboration with michael dent. An intro follows:

Roll for You
The second of my collaborations with Michael. I didn't know until I had completed it what it was about precisely, but the abstraction of working oblivious to the context of the words paradoxically facilitated a soundscape for them. Although I find Michael's best work piercing, I also enjoy working to a sense of "unlanguage", or "words as things", and to this end use a great deal of repetition and monotony (i.e. "on and on and on") to make the words mean nothing.

My first attempt at intuiting Michael's meaning proved successful, from a baby boomer Patsy Cline clip sure to sync with our mutual timeline, to some dissonant loops that create a characteristically muggy, foggy Datawhore undertow.

When I Die
The anger, plain-talking and stoicism in Michael's short text points up the pluses of his work. He can be verbose, but it's these laconic pieces or fragments thereof that make him interesting to me. Human, damaged and defiant, his attitude can grate but there is a core of almost perverse compassion that even if only inferred yet proves attractive.

Depuis quelques semaines, les éditeurs sont la cible de spams émanant d’«Agrégateurs » ou « E-distributeurs agréés pour le projet SNE-BNF »[1]*. Ces spams leur rappellent l’échéance des dépôts de dossier auprès du Centre National du Livre en vue de la numérisation de leurs fonds, et ils sont accompagnés 1) d’une lettre-type, qu’il suffirait – semble-t-il – de remplir aux endroits laissés en blanc (nom, adresse, somme demandée, etc.) et de retourner au CNL pour obtenir la subvention, et 2) d’un devis de numérisation par lesdits Agrégateurs, lesquels se proposent d’« accompagner [les éditeurs] pour (sic) la création du dossier de demande de subvention ». «Le CNL dispose d’un budget de plusieurs centaines de milliers d’euro pour fin 2008. Ne manquez pas cette occasion!» clament encore ces spams[2]. Il convient donc de rappeler en quelques mots de quoi il s’agit. Le projet Gallica2, partenaire français du projet de Bibliothèque Numérique Européenne, oblige les éditeurs à passer par les services d’E-distributeurs agréés pour faire figurer leurs fonds numérisés sur le portail de la Bibliothèque Nationale. Cette riche idée d’un nouvel intermédiaire dans la chaîne du livre vers les bibliothèques est sortie du cerveau malin du fondateur de l’une de ces sociétés de E-distribution à qui la BNF a confié – moyennant finances (publiques, bien sûr !) – la rédaction d’une étude en vue de la création de la Bibliothèque numérique européenne. Dit autrement : on a demandé à Machin de dire quel était le plus court chemin du livre numérique vers la bibliothèque ; Machin a répondu – et a trouvé « des gens assez simples pour le croire » : « Du livre numérique à la bibliothèque, il n’y a qu’un seul chemin : il doit passer par moi, Machin, quitte à ce qu’il y ait quelques autres sous-Machins pour noyer le poisson… ma non troppo». Ce qui suppose, dans l’esprit de Machin, qu’il n’existe plus en France de structures dont le métier consiste à vendre des livres, ou alors que les efforts que ces structures font en vue de se mettre à l’heure du numérique sont nulles et non avenues ; cela suppose également que les éditeurs ne sont pas en mesure de numériser eux-mêmes leurs fonds (ils travaillent encore sur des machines à écrire et certains utilisent la plume d’oie) ; qu’en outre, ils ne savent pas où se trouve la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, et que les quelques économies qu’ils parviennent encore à faire devront servir à payer un nouvel intermédiaire… que je ne résiste pas désormais à baptiser du nom de « marchand de bits »[3]. De plus, un organisme comme le Centre National du Livre, au fonctionnement quasi irréprochable, ou en tout cas autant que peut l’être un organisme d’Etat, dont les fonds proviennent des différentes taxes sur la photocopie et les photocopieurs et dont la mission est d’aider l’édition française en lui redistribuant le manque à gagner causé par la photocopie à grande échelle — le Centre National du Livre, dis-je, consacrera désormais une partie de son budget à accorder des subventions à des éditeurs pour qu’ils les reversent intégralement à ces « marchands de bits » sans lesquels ils n’auront pas accès à Gallica2[4]. C’est tout simplement une opération de racket à grande échelle, à l’endroit d’une profession confrontée toujours plus à des situations difficiles et que la récente crise économique risque de malmener plus encore.
Il est urgent de se demander alors :
1) Si le portail d’une Bibliothèque Nationale est véritablement le lieu approprié pour la vente de fichiers de livres numériques.
2) Quand bien même ce serait le cas[5], est-il raisonnable alors d’imposer aux éditeurs un nouvel intermédiaire dans la chaîne du livre, quand il existe en France des gens dont le métier consiste à vendre des livres et qui pourraient de la même manière, à travers la mise en place de sites marchands, prendre en charge la vente de ces mêmes livres sous leur forme numérique ?[6]
3) N’est-ce pas aux éditeurs eux-mêmes à gérer leurs fonds numériques et accomplir ainsi la mutation à laquelle les contraint internet ?
Encourager et subventionner par ricochet pervers la sous-traitance de la numérisation des fonds des éditeurs et sa commercialisation revient, à moyen terme, à considérer l’édition – une certaine édition – comme une profession condamnée à disparaître, ne serait-ce qu’en réduisant les aides spécifiques à l’édition de livres ‘papier’ dans le domaine de la littérature, des sciences humaines, et des traductions. Ce n’est pas, que je sache, la vocation du Centre National du Livre, à moins de le rebaptiser le Centre National de l’e-book. Si l’on veut absolument aider l’édition à passer l’épreuve du numérique, il faut l’aider à « devenir ce qu’elle est ».
Il est important que les « gens du livre » prennent conscience de ce qui se trame ici à leur insu. Les nouvelles technologies du livre numérique ne sont pas plus adaptées à la lecture que n’a pu être naguère l’escroquerie, suivie de faillites retentissantes, de l’e-book et du cy-book. Elles peuvent accompagner le livre, au titre de l’information ou de la consultation, mais ne sont pas encore en mesure de se substituer à lui. Elles doivent être conçues comme des «compagnons de route».
L’éco-système constitué par les auteurs, les éditeurs, les distributeurs, les libraires et les lecteurs est mis en danger par ces nouveaux venus, qui n’ont pu trouver leur place que parce que l’édition et la librairie n’ont pas su à temps prendre internet à bras le corps et y inventer de nouvelles manières d’éditer qui renforcent leur pratique traditionnelle. De cela, les éditeurs et les libraires sont, certes, en partie responsables. Mais cette prise de conscience tardive commence à porter ses fruits. La librairie indépendante investit la vente en ligne, l’édition met en place ses propres structures pour valoriser ses fonds sur internet. Le lecteur de livres n’est pas dupe « d’une encre électronique qui n’est pas de l’encre et du papier électronique qui n’est pas du papier ». Différents projets de bibliothèques numériques voient le jour en prenant en compte à la fois la réalité des éditeurs et celles des libraires ; elles font l’objet, il est vrai, de procédures hypocrites et chauvines qui témoignent du caractère rétrograde des instances fédératives (et exclusives) de l’édition française[7]. Le projet de Gallica2 tel qu’il est conçu – et que ces mêmes instances soutiennent et encouragent – est un déni de ces efforts. Il plante dans le dos de l’édition française des e-bandrilles qui finiront par avoir raison du livre.

Ces noms barbares désignent une nouvelle ‘race’ d’intermédiaires dans la chaîne du livre. « Agrégateurs », parce qu’ils auraient pour mission d’agréger les électrons libres de l’édition traditionnelle et, par là-même de leur conférer un statut grégaire, sous le bâton d’e-bergers privés subventionnés par l’Etat. C’est sans doute cette ‘manne’ publique qui a convaincu Hachette de faire l’acquisition de l’un d’entre eux (Numilog), pour une somme « relativement modeste » (selon le communiqué d’Hachette) de quelques millions d’euros.

[2]. Voici un extrait de l’un de ces spams dont nous vous laissons apprécier l’outrecuidance. Les termes en gras et en couleurs sont de l’E-distributeur (nota bene: lequel n'est pas "Machin", mais "Machin-Chose"!!) ; le soulignement et les commentaires entre crochets sont du rédacteur de ce coup de gueule:
«Dans le cadre du projet SNE / BNF d'aide à la diffusion numérique de documents sous droits, Le Centre national du Livre subventionne votre projet à hauteur de 50% des coûts.
Machin-chose.fr , E-Distributeur agréé, vous accompagne pour la création de votre dossier de demande de subvention !
Il vous suffit de compléter les deux documents ci-joints et de les adresser au CNL AVANT le PREMIER NOVEMBRE 2008 [JOUR DES MORTS !] (la date limite de dépôt de dossier pour une demande de subvention, ouvert à tous adhérents et non-adhérents SNE, est le 2 novembre)
Le CNL dispose d'un budget de plusieurs centaines de milliers d'euro pour fin 2008. Ne manquez pas cette occasion !

- Vous obtenez l'accord pour la subvention [sic et simpliciter].
- Vous nous expédiez les exemplaires à numériser et votre commande de services.
- Nous réalisons la numérisation, l'OCR (reconnaissance des caractères) et la création du PDF (PDF en mode image devant et texte caché)
- Nous mettons les ebooks en vente sur www.machin-chose.fr aux tarifs que vous définissez.
- Nous remontons les contenus et métadonnées vers Gallica 2 pour un indexage de vos titres (le moteur de recherche de Gallica 2 réalise un indexage complet et renvoie vers www.machin-chose.fr en cas de requête)
- Nous vous reversons 60% du montant des ventes en ligne.

[3]. Ce qu’ils sont pour la plupart, à l’exception toutefois de Tite-Live, partenaire du livre depuis déjà plusieurs années et dont le projet a l’énorme avantage (éthique) d’impliquer les libraires dans ce processus de vente, rétablissant ainsi la chaîne traditionnelle du livre.

[4] Quelques jours après la mise en ligne de ce texte, et après des échanges de vues avec François Gèze, entre autres, ce dernier m'apprend, qu'à sa demande, le CNL ne réservera plus les aides à la numérisation au seul projet Gallica2. C'est déjà un grand pas de fait. On ne peut que saluer cette initiative et saluer aussi celle de François Gèze, qui tout en soutenant - c'est son droit - le projet tel qu'il a été conçu, ne manque pas de suggérer des corrections là où la copie doit être revue...

[5]. Les récentes expériences-test tendent à prouver qu’il n’en est rien et que les ventes de fichiers sont quasi nulles. Sur neuf mois d’expériences menées par l’un de ces agrégateurs, sur un livre des Editions de l’éclat – et non des moindres, puisqu’il s’agissait de la traduction de l’Ethique de Spinoza par Robert Misrahi – les ventes de fichiers étaient de … 2 exemplaires...

[6]. C’est d’ailleurs ce que propose le portail Tite-Live (voir note 3), d’où la différence qu’il convient de faire entre leur projet et ceux des autres Agrégateurs.

[7]. Je veux parler, évidemment, des procès en cours à l’initiative du SNE et du groupe La Martinière contre le projet Google-recherche-de-livres. Pour une approche saine du projet Google-recherche de livres, se reporter aux déclarations de Mr Bazin, bibliothécaire de la Bibliothèque de Lyon, qui vient de conclure un accord avec l’‘ogre’ américain et qui semble ne pas craindre d’être mangé tout cru, au contraire.

I was at a bit of a loss when I really thought about it, "I've lived in Los Angeles for three years now and I've never crossed the threshold of the LA Central Library."
It boggles mind, non?
So on the occasion of on Ms. Kane's birthday I put a plan into action to rectify my strange bibliophile virginity (*ahem*). November had dipped back into summer time temperatures for several weeks. Blazing heat and sunlight all day and then warm t-shirt weather through the night. As Katherine's birthday neared the temperature began to relinquish and then dropped, in toto, to winter conditions in the sparked light between dusk and twilight. With the cool weather came Los Angeles' casual flirtation with rain. Though we have been much deprived this year, I still held out, hope against hope, that soon the sky would crack and the floodwaters would rush in and clean our fair city, ceiling to gutter.
The sky remained an intense grey as I slipped out to Van Nuys to pick up Ms. Kane. I retrieved her in a rush and we flew back into the city. While I pretended to finish my work day Ms. Kane busied herself with fantasies of tentacles and the lines only a woman possesses.

When the clock struck four, we rushed from the Taft Building and onto Hollywood Blvd. Since I was deemed concierge for a Brooklynite I considered it apropos to introduce her to the (mostly worthless, but still enticing) Los Angeles Subway. We breached the Earth's surface and followed the clicking stone stairs down into the bowels of the city. She marveled at the cleanliness, but reminded herself that in comparison, LA's underground had a century to catch up to New York's historical filth.
We were soon climbing toward the Nimbus ceiling again and emerged into a frigid but crowded Pershing Square. Though I keep an excellent sense of direction at hand, (possibly sub-consciously) I neglected to take a close look at our travel route from subway to Library. No bother, both of us quite like the idea of wandering around downtown LA on foot. Clearly, we are not natives...
Night had fallen in dark heavy sheets and as we turned the dead-end corner of Hope St. Ms. Kane buried her head in my shoulder and giggled. She knew exactly where I was taking her now.
The Central Library bursts majestically skyward from the dull asphalt of Hope St.'s end. We ascended the South staircases and resigned to have cigarette before losing ourselves in the stacks of human thought. Most people are unaware that a great deal of filming for movies, TV, et cetera, based in "New York" actually takes place in downtown Los Angeles. The cool air, glass and steel facades, and sparse vegetation screaming between the cracks of enormous and archaic stone, make the City of Angels New York's bastard sibling, left for dead, on the trail toward the 49'er rush. The stone work on the sides and eaves of the building are mesmerizing, spanning mythologies of ancient cultures and minor historical references to the 1920s.
We quietly slipped into the monolithic building and located a map. We both had several floors to visit and decided to divide and conquer. The enormous ceilings, glass walls on every level and the breathtaking main foyer containing the bulk of modern escalators were nearly unbearable visual stimuli. I found it difficult to concentrate on searching for books in the midst of this enthralling structure. I spent the majority of my time there looking up and around and missing the stacks of books altogether.

After three hours we called it quits and headed back into the night air. We swiftly arrived at, and dipped underneath Pershing Square to wait for a ride back to Hollywood. Owing to color confusion we ended up riding the wrong train to South Downtown. For the first time I witnessed MTA cops asking for tickets as people slowly walked up the stone stairs to the street. We got back on the train, headed in the right direction this time...and finally arrived back at Hollywood & Vine. Katherine felt dripping water as we walked up the stairs, but dismissed it as urban perspiration. When we hit street level we were both awash in a freak Los Angeles downpour. The whites, yellows, blues and reds of Hollywood traffic jams and storefronts danced on an endless glass surface. The pitch black of sidewalk and asphalt glowed with wet reflection and the famous intersection was alive with dancing color and rushing rainwater. Owing to my special brand of boyscout paranoia, I had an umbrella under my arm and we stepped out into the fray like professionals...dry professionals.

Hydrogen Jukebox
This is an Opéra de chambre by Philip Glass (né en 1937) from poems by Allen Ginsberg (1926]1997)Musical direction by Philippe Nahon

Born in the still hot ashes of the memory of Viêt Nam, Allen ginsberg's poems , sung through the music of Philip Glass, became Hydrogen Jukebox, an astonishing satirical opera which denounces America in the fifties and sixties op to the eighties. It spreads on history not only absurdity of a suicidal planet, but also freed pleasures, destroyed dreams and destress of modern man.

Twenty years later, the work still is actual, and thanks to the producer Joël Jouanneau , regains its adolescent revolt inherited from the Beat generation, those poets philosophers who shook up the clear conscience of a too self-confident world.

At the end of the forties, three young writers meet at Columbia university. They share the unreasonableness of a starting life, the hate of an ending war, the trauma of the first nuclear bomb. And they smolder a vitriolic work. The elder one, William Burroughs, will publish Naked Lunch in 1959. The younger one, Allen Ginsberg, will publish his compilation Howl in 1956. But Jack Kerouac, author of the best seller "On the Road", published in 1957 though it was writen since 1948, gives the name the beat generation, evoking the beats, those wanderers stowing away in merchandise trains. Alcool, sex, drugs, they become living illustrations of Kerouac's profession of faith : "The only alive people are those who have madness to live, to speak, to be saved, and want to have pleasure at the same time." The movements gets larger in San Francisco in the fifties, the City Lights Book of the poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti becomes their general quarter, Ginsberg declaims his poems in the stadiums. Their bohemian way of life, their spontaneous, militant, libertarian works will inspire the young beatneils, the future hippies and even the French may 1968.

In 1988, to answer a comand of Viet Nam veterans, Philip Glass searches Allen Ginsberg whom he met in India.
Together they gather the most vivid verses of the poet of the beat generation, imagine Hydrogen Jukebox in fifteen parts, a kaleidoscopic iconoclast of America from the fifties to the eighties.

Twenty years later, in a workshop set evoking the famous Factory of Andy Warhol in the sixties, melting pot where the most known artists were training, the producer Joël Jouanneau lets Hydrogen Jukebox to recreate itself again, and live in our time.

A l'occasion de la parution de "Démunis", traduit de l'allemand par Marie-Claude Auger, Katharina Hacker est invitée à la maison Heinrich Heine le jeudi 4 décembre à 20h.Cette rencontre sera présentée par Cécile Wajsbrot.

Katharina Hacker est née en 1967 à Francfort. Elle a suivi des études de philosophie, d'histoire et de civilisation juive à Freiburg, puis en Israël où elle a vécu et travaillé pendant plusieurs années. Depuis 1996, elle vit à Berlin, où elle se consacre à l'écriture. Elle a notamment publié aux éditions Suhrkamp "Eine Art Liebe", "Der Bademeister", "Morpheus oder Der Schnabelschuh" et "Tel Aviv. Eine Stadterzählung". Elle a été distinguée par plusieurs prix littéraires ."Démunis" (Die Habenichtse) est le premier roman de Katharina Hacker traduit en français. Nés dans les cendres encore chaudes de la mémoire du Viêt]Nam, les vers déclamés d’Allen Ginsberg, portés au chant par la musique de Philip Glass, devinrent Hydrogen Jukebox, étonnant pamphlet lyrique qui fustige l'Amérique des années 50 à 80, qui jette sur la toile de l’Histoire non seulement l’absurdité d’une planète suicidaire, mais aussi les plaisirs libérés, les rêves détruits et la détresse de l’homme moderne.

Vingt ans plus tard, l’œuvre n’a rien perdu de son actualité, retrouve entre les mains du metteur en scène Joël Jouanneau sa révolte adolescente héritée de la beat generation, ces poètes philosophes qui secouèrent la bonne conscience d’un monde trop sûr de lui.

A la fin des années 1940, trois jeunes écrivains se rencontrent à l’université de Columbia, partagent la déraison d’une vie qui commence, la haine d’une guerre qui s’achève, le traumatisme de la première bombe nucléaire. Et couvent une œuvre au vitriol. Le plus âgé, William Burroughs, publiera le Festin nu en 1959. Le plus jeune, Allen Ginsberg, son recueil Howl dès 1956. Mais c’est Jack Kerouac, auteur du livre à succès Sur la route, paru en 1957 bien qu’écrit depuis 1948, qui donne un nom à ce qu’ils sont, la beat generation, évoquant les beats, ces vagabonds prenant clandestinement les trains de marchandises. Alcool, sexe, drogue, ils deviennent l’illustration vivante de la profession de foi de Kerouac : « Les seuls gens qui existent sont ceux qui ont la démence de vivre, de discourir, d'être sauvés, qui veulent jouir de tout à la fois. » Le mouvement s’amplifie à San Francisco dans les années 1950, la City Lights Books du poète Lawrence Ferlinghetti devient leur quartier général, Ginsberg déclame ses poèmes dans les stades. Leur vie de bohème, leurs œuvres spontanées, militantes, libertaires, inspireront les jeunes beatniks, les futurs hippies et même le mai 68 français.

En 1988, pour répondre à une commande de vétérans du Viêt]Nam, Philip Glass part à la recherche d’Allen Ginsberg qu’il a connu en Inde.

Ensemble, ils assemblent les vers les plus vifs du poète de la beat generation, imaginent Hydrogen Jukebox en quinze tableaux, un kaléidoscope iconoclaste de l’Amérique des années 1950 à 1980.

Vingt ans plus tard, dans un décor atelier qui évoque la célèbre Factory du Andy Warhol des années 1960, creuset où se forgeaient et se brûlaient les artistes les plus en vue, le metteur en scène Joël Jouanneau laisse Hydrogen Jukebox se créer à nouveau, se revivre dans notre temps.
Créé au Spoleto Music Festival de Charleston, le 26 mai 1990.
