Le Carrefour des Impasses / The Crossroads of Dead Ends

This book is a document on French psychiatry during the eighties. The first version is on line at http://www.inter-zone.org/0Sommaire.html. Some chapters are available in English. For the definitive version to be published, I am scanning the issues of the magazine "Objectifs", realized by the group B23, an experiment conducted with the complicity of Burroughs and Brion Gysin.

The evolution of psychiatry in France, in the framework of globalization  and public private partnership, has led to the suppression of the psychiatric studies for nurses; the studies for psychiatrists have been shortened. Classical psychotherapy is not taught anymore nor practiced, and the activities which were organized before for the patients have been suppressed. The whole history of psychiatry, of the advances realized since WW2 with the opening of asylums, has been rubbed out.
 
As a result, the professionals in the area are retreated for the most,  or have been sent off, replaced with non qualified workers, with lower salaries. This has led to a decrease of the quality of cares, too often limited to the prescription of psychotropic medicines, electric shock treatment, and to a criminalization of mental patients, a part of which is sent to prison.
The officials in charge of psychiatry are managers, completely ignorant as far as psychiatry itself is concerned, whose evaluations rest on financial criteria, without consideration for the patients and staff.
 
The aim of "The crossroads of Dead Ends" is to keep alive the memory of experiments conducted in the past, to show that the present psychiatry is not "normal", and that different cares are possible.  

More on "Le Porte Lame" ("Blade Runner") by Burroughs

Reading "Le Porte Lame", the French translation of Blade Runner by William Burroughs, I realized that his description of American health system was rather similar to what can be observed nowadays in France. This makes a change for European readers in the meaning of his books, as he has described then what would become our future situation, which we could not foresee then.
Hence, we can reread the whole Burroughs' work through the light of the present, compare its contents 
with the facts in 2011, to come to a better understanding of the mechanisms of the system we live in, as well as a new reading of his books.
 
Burroughs wrote about control systems before Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, whom he influenced : see Gilles Deleuze's article "Post-scriptum sur les sociétés de contrôle", published in L'Autre Journal in 1990.

Born on 11 11th, Roberto Matta would be 100 y o on November 2011.
Presentation on November 18th, 5 pm.
For the occasion, several animations realized by Srédérique Fantune 
from some drawings of the notebook
at SometimeStudio, 26 rue Saint Claude 75003 Paris
 
Matta gave this notebook to his son Ramuntcho, for his 40th birthday, some months before he found himself paralyzed due to a very rare syndrome. This precious manuscript accompanied Ramuntcho in his remission and is now shared, in memory of his father, to celebrate his centenary.

Quelques nouvelles de l'éclat



Bonjour,
à compter du 3 novembre,
L’éclat inaugure une nouvelle collection de textes courts (de 48 à 128 p.), de petit format (10 cm sur 15cm) et à petit prix (de 5 à 10 euros).


“L’idée de la collection de petit format, si elle est presque aussi ancienne que le livre lui-même, correspond aujourd’hui à de nouvelles pratiques de lecture et à une nouvelle gestion du temps. Longtemps réticents à ce principe d’équarrissage des livres, nous espérons, avec ce projet, rester fidèles aux principes d’édition qui sont les nôtres et faire bénéficier les auteurs de notre catalogue de cette forme de livres, adaptée au nouvel ‘esprit du temps’. Valoriser le fonds des éditions à travers ce nouveau format, accueillir des textes courts d’auteurs proches de notre (zigzagante) ligne éditoriale, servir de laboratoire pour des travaux en cours, tels sont les objectifs de ces “éclats” de l’éclat, dont nous ne manquerons pas de rappeler en quatrième de couverture, en forme de devise, que “ceci n’est pas un livre”.

Paraissent dès à présent trois titres de Diderot, Coltrane et Massimo Cacciari, qui témoignent au moins de l’éclectisme du choix...

En préparation des textes de José Bergamín, Sergio Bettini, Hermann Broch, Léon Chestov, Jean-Clet Martin, Pseudo-Kant, Gershom Scholem, María Zambrano ....

      A cette occasion seront présentées les animations réalisées par Srédérique Fantune 
      à partir de certains dessins du carnet.

      Notebook est un carnet de l’artiste Roberto MATTA.  Écrits et dessins, 
      réflexions et interrogations se croisent. 
      300 pages content et racontent cette année 1943. Celui qui 
      l’ouvre s’aventure dans une sphère privée. 
      Il s’agit d’une incursion au sein du monologue intérieur de Matta. 
      Dans la représentation morphologique de son discours 
      chaotique et cosmique, où s’entremêlent avec force images, concepts, 
      mouvement et vide, douleur, inquiétude et plaisir traduits par 
      le graphisme propre de sa singulière galaxie.
      1943 fut une année complexe pour Matta. Il était alors en exil à New York. 
      Lui et un noyau du groupe surréaliste avaient quitté Paris, 
      à l’aube de la seconde guerre mondiale. Matta avait émigré de son 
      Chili natal vers la France au milieu des années 30, 
      et il avait troqué sa profession d’architecte pour celle de peintre, sculpteur, humaniste.
      Il donne des conférences à la New School of Social Research et reçoit 
      beaucoup de jeunes Américains dans son atelier. 
      De cette ouverture naîtra entre autre l'expressionnisme abstrait dans 
      lequel on trouve Robert Motherwelll,  Willem De Kooning, Jackson Pollock... 
      Ce carnet représente la somme de cette expérience. 
      Ce cahier de dessins et de réflexions traduit une crise existentielle fondée 
      par la guerre, l'exil, la hantise de devenir père, un avenir sans futur. 
      Crise qui ici se transforme en énergie créatrice.
       "Notebook est le carnet d’artiste de Roberto MATTA, daté de 1943. 
      Écrit et dessiné par lui, et personne d’autres. 
      Comme si nous entrions dans l’espace sidéral d’un de ses tableaux ou 
      dans son esprit, pour y trouver les premières esquisses de son acte créateur,
       de sa pensée, de ses injonctions à l’univers. C’est un document créé dans un temps 
      hors du temps, où les mots n’étaient pas encore des mots sinon des assemblages 
      de lettres qui renvoyaient à des concepts lointains, comme la lueur des étoiles 
      filant dans la plénitude obscure du firmament…
      C’est  en 1943 que Matta va être impacté par le mystère de la vie. Son épouse, 
      Anne Clark, « le petit oiseau », était sur le point de mettre au monde les jumeaux, 
      Gordon et Batan. Lui se demandait alors comment il allait recevoir 
      ces deux êtres dans un monde en déshérence. A cette époque, 
      Matta dessine les cartes du tarot pour « Arcane 17 » 
      d’André Breton et scrute de nouveau ces archétypes millénaires. 
      Lui parlèrent-ils des enfants qui allaient voir le jour ? 
      Gordon laissera derrière lui un héritage artistique puissant à l’intérieur 
      du mouvement conceptuel et Batan une œuvre féconde et surprenante, 
      encore à découvrir. Ils moururent trente ans avant leur géniteur.
      Est-ce qu’il voyait venir également la rupture imminente avec André Breton, 
      son expulsion du mouvement surréaliste et de l’Ecole de New-York, 
      d’où il poussa ses disciples à sortir les toiles des chevalets pour 
      les poser au sol et peindre guidés par la psyché, connectés impérativement 
      avec le devenir de la Terre et de l’Homme ? Cette double naissance, 
      en pleine guerre et à l’aune d’une rupture totale à l’intérieur 
      de son univers affectif et créatif, réveilla chez Matta 
      une urgence suprême : celle de contribuer à l’évolution de l’être humain,
      de réveiller sa conscience et il mit son œuvre au service de cette cause.
      Lui s’identifiait à l’arcane 11, celui de la Force, étant né le onze du onze du onze. 
      Trois fois la Force. Sa force, il l’utilisa pour s’échapper et revenir en Europe. 
      Dans ses lettres, il est écrit que cela le touchait d’être Matta 
      et qu’il construisit ainsi son destin.
      Si l’unique destinataire de ce carnet était lui-même, Matta altéra sa 
      trajectoire quand il en fit cadeau à son fils Ramuntcho, 
      en 2000, pour ses 40 ans. Il remit ce manuscrit entre les mains 
      de Ramuntcho quelques mois avant que ce dernier ne se 
      retrouve paralysé par un syndrome rarissime. 
      Ce précieux manuscrit qui accompagna Ramuntcho 
      dans sa rémission est aujourd’hui offert en partage, en mémoire de son père, 
      pour célébrer son centenaire."
